July 2nd, 2009 by john --> · 3 Comments

june27th-meeting-museoPaterson. On Saturday June 27th the Commissioner Pedro Rodriguez and the new superintendent of education Dr. Donnie Evans met with the community in the Paterson Museum.
The event was organized by the commissioner of Education Pedro Rodriguez to make the administrative officials of the Paterson public schools more accessible and visible to the community at large.

The event, which exceeds the capacity of the museum and left many people standing, was a great demonstration that the community wants to engage and be part of decision-making that take place in public schools of Paterson, expressed commissioner Rodriguez. “Today we proved that when the community is called to discuss issues in education and the call is made from genuine and selfless source, the community responds” said Commissioner Rodriguez.

The event reflected the great diversity we have in Paterson, with the representation of different ethnic groups residing in the city. Among the personalities who attended the event was Mr. Daniel Andre President Haitian Civic Organization, Mohamed El Filali, outreach director of the Islamic Center of Passaic County in Paterson, Mr Gapar Abreu president of Copellanos club, Ramon Guzman president of DOPOR among other community leaders. PATERSON — The City Council deadlocked on its vote to elect a council president Wednesday, angering members of the public who contend city officials can’t work together.
None of the nominees for council president — Rigo Rodriguez, William B. McKoy and Aslon Goow Sr. — was able to muster a majority during city government’s annual reorganization.
For McKoy, who served as council president for the last year, the vote failed, with council members Rodriguez, Andre Sayegh, Goow, Julio Tavarez and Jeffery Jones voting against him. Along with McKoy’s vote for himself, Vera Ames-Garnes, Anthony Davis and Ken Morris voted in his favor.
Likewise, votes for Goow and Rodriguez failed, with Goow getting only three votes — from himself, Sayegh and Tavarez — and Rodriguez receiving four, from Sayegh, Tavarez, Goow and himself.
After rounds of failed votes, members recessed for about an hour to discuss the stalemate in their chambers, but returned without an agreement.
In frustration, Rodriguez abruptly got up in the middle of the meeting and left.
“This is a joke,” he said bitterly. “I cannot support such things.” [Read more →]

State Board of Education Adopts Revised High School Graduation Requirements
and Revised Curriculum Standards in Six Content Areas

The State Board of Education today adopted revised high school graduation requirements, culminating a three-year effort to ensure that a New Jersey high school diploma reflects a level of student achievement that will lead to a successful future.

In related action, the board also adopted revised Core Curriculum Content Standards in six areas, assuring that the knowledge and skills students obtain in high school will prepare them for college or the workplace.

Together, the revised graduation requirements and revised content standards lay the cornerstone in the foundation for a planned re-design of New Jersey’s high schools to reflect new demands and expectations from employers and the higher education community. [Read more →]

A Very Costly Kiss: Senior Denied Diploma

June 17th, 2009 by john --> · 2 Comments

By Mike Krumboltz

For teens, there is no greater joy than graduating high school. Shaking off the shackles of education and claiming that hard-fought diploma is truly an epic day. Unfortunately, for several students at Bonny Eagle High School in Maine, their natural exuberance has led to some surprisingly serious problems.

On Friday night, when the senior class was waiting to graduate, excitement began to grow. Students bounced a large inflatable rubber duck. The noise level rose. And then came “the kiss.” When called, one student walked on stage to receive his diploma and blew a kiss to his family. The school administrator, clearly not the sentimental sort, sent the student back to his seat … sans diploma.

Here’s the video:

Paterson Building Had Two Previous Fires

June 8th, 2009 by Luisa --> · Click here to post a comment

    PATERSON — Residents displaced by a Sunday blaze that started in an abandoned duplex said the building had twice caught fire in the past 13 months and neighbors complained repeatedly to city officials that is was unsafe.

The early morning fire, which arson investigators are examining, did not cause any injuries but about 25 people in the two adjacent buildings on 17th Street are now homeless.

“We have 11 people in this house and we all could have died,” said Carlos Ferreira, 32, who lives with his family in the bottom floor of a neighboring building that was heavily damaged by the fire.

City officials deemed the charred hulk unsafe after the fire and crews demolished it Sunday.

City Councilwoman Vera Ames-Garnes, who represents the city’s 4th Ward, said residents had not spoken to her about the building.

But Robinson Ronbon, 23, who lives in a building on the other side of the vacant duplex, said his mother, Maria, had sent a petition to city officials asking them to board up the building after the first fire, on May 7, 2008. She had called housing inspectors “four or five” times since then, he said.

A more minor fire over the winter had renewed her concern.

Officials boarded up the building about three months ago, but it was still accessible to neighborhood kids, who went inside to smoke, Ronbon said. Neighbors said they thought the building had been foreclosed on, but weren’t sure and property records could not immediately be located.
